—  Policies and Procedures for UCLA
Endowed Chairs, Endowments, and
Professorial Name Chairs  —

I. UCLA Endowed Chairs

Endowed Chairs are reserved for distinguished scholars and teachers.

The holder of an Endowed Chair will be designated as the "__________ Professor of __________."

To allow flexibility to donors and to the University, the following categories of Endowed Chairs and Named Chairs are provided for:

  1. Permanent Endowed Chair;
  2. Five-Year-Term Endowed Chair;
  3. Endowed Chair Linked to an Academic Administrative Position;
  4. Endowed Chair for a Visitor
  5. Presidential Chair
  6. Endowment Associated with a Deanship
  7. Professorial Name Chair

An Endowed Chair may be designated by the donor to be used in one or more of the above categories, or, in the absence of such designation, may be assigned by the Chancellor for use from time to time in one or more of these categories.

Chair payout made available to holders of Endowed Chairs shall be used to support teaching and research activities pursuant to University policy and according to a budget recommended annually by the Chair holder and approved by the Dean and/or Chancellor in the normal budgetary process.

During any period in which an Endowed Chair is not filled, the Chancellor may authorize the appropriate Dean, after consultation with the relevant department(s), to use the endowment’s income in support of research and teaching in the designated area of study.

The President may approve exceptions to these policies.

Further information regarding each category is provided below:

A. Permanent Endowed Chair

A Permanent Endowed Chair may be used to honor a distinguished faculty member already at UCLA, or to attract a distinguished scholar and teacher to the UCLA faculty.

Appointment to a Permanent Endowed Chair is for the appointee’s term as a member of the faculty, with the designation "emeritus" added to the appointee’s title upon retirement from tenured status.

1. Search Procedures

  1. A search committee, with multi-department representation, shall be appointed by the appropriate Dean(s) after consultation with the relevant Department Chair(s).
  2. Where appropriate, the Chancellor, upon recommendation of the Dean(s), may limit the search pool to individuals who are already members of the UCLA faculty.
  3. The committee shall conduct a search taking all reasonable steps to ensure the widest possible range of qualified candidates are included in the pool of potential candidates.
  4. The committee shall file a report describing the procedures followed and including its ranked list of candidates with explanation as to why the recommended candidate was judged superior to others on the list.

2. Appointment Procedures

Departmental and campus appointment procedures applicable to advancement to the higher steps of the professor rank will be followed. The Chancellor, upon recommendation of the Council on Academic Personnel, has final approval authority for appointment.

3. Compensation

Unless expressly prohibited by the gift instrument, endowment payout may be used to support the base salary, or a portion of the base salary of a Chair holder. Payout from a Chair endowment may also be used to support additional compensation under an approved compensation plan, the Off-Scale component of salary, sabbatical supplement or summer salary of the Chair holder in accordance with applicable policies.

B. Five-Year Endowed Chair

Appointment policies and procedures, including search procedures, follow those for Permanent Endowed Chairs except that the appointment to the Chair is for a term of five years. At the end of the appointment the holder of the Endowed Chair will be designated as the "__________ Professor of __________" (19xx-19xx). Five-Year Term Endowed Chair holders are not normally eligible for a second term.

C. Endowed Chair Linked to an Academic Administrative Position

An Endowed Chair Linked to an Academic Administrative Position is intended to enhance the attractiveness and academic prestige of an administrative position for a distinguished scholar and teacher. Such an Endowed Chair is limited to a faculty member who is a Department Chair, Director of an Organized Research Unit, or holder of an equivalent administrative position.

Appointment to the Endowed Chair is for the period of the appointee’s tenure in the associated administrative position. After the end of the appointment to the academic administrative position, the holder of the Endowed Chair will be designated as the "__________ Professor of __________ (19xx-19xx)."

In cases in which there is a search committee for the administrative position, the search may also be for appointment to the Endowed Chair. In cases in which there is not a search committee for the administrative position, the Dean shall arrange for a separate review of the individual’s qualifications for appointment to the Endowed Chair. Departmental and campus procedures applicable to appointment to a Permanent Endowed Chair are applicable.

D. Endowed Chair for a Visitor

An Endowed Chair for a Visitor is intended to bring a distinguished scholar and teacher to UCLA as a visitor, normally for a one year period.

Appointment policies and procedures applicable to Visiting appointments are applicable.

E. Presidential Chair

Presidential Chairs are supported by funds provided by the Office of the President. For specific information about the terms and conditions for the creation and employment of Presidential Chairs contact the Academic Personnel Office. Approval for the establishment of Presidential Chairs rests with the President. The establishment of Presidential Chairs should be directed to the goals of recruitment and retention of targeted scholars on the one hand, and encouragement of high quality new and/or interdisciplinary program development on the other hand.

The advice of the Council on Academic Personnel shall be sought regarding the decision to create a Presidential Chair for a particular faculty recruitment or retention target. No commitment relating to the creation or allocation of a Presidential Chair should be made without the approval of the appropriate official in the Chancellor’s Office. Initiation of the decision to use a Presidential Chair for a particular recruitment or retention target shall rest with the Dean, subject to the approval of the Provost, or where there is no Provost or a one-department school is involved, the Chancellor’s Office. Final authority to approve holders of Presidential Chairs rests with the Chancellor

F. Endowment Associated with a Deanship

Named endowments linked to a Deanship may be established in order to attract and retain outstanding Deans. A Dean who has demonstrated his or her outstanding leadership qualities and administrative skills can be designated as the " _____________ Dean of the School of ___________ ." Appointment to this position can occur simultaneously with consideration of the candidate’s qualifications to be appointed as Dean. The payout from the endowment is to be used for the teaching, research and service activities of the department, research unit, school or college. Such endowments linked to a Deanship may be established upon the recommendation of the faculty of the school, following consultation with the Academic Senate and approval of the Chancellor.

G. Professorial Name Chair

The Regents have authorized a category of Chairs called "Professorial Name Chairs," honoring the memory of distinguished deceased faculty members. The occupant of the Chair carries the honorary professorial title associated with the Chair, but there is no monetary fund associated with such Chairs nor any other perquisites.

The following provisions apply to the establishment of a Professorial Name Chair:

  1. The Professorial Chair holder is limited to the department (or one of the departments) in which the honored faculty member after whom the Chair is named held an appointment.
  2. The Chair will bear the name of the distinguished deceased faculty member after whom the Chair is named, but no other adjective (such as "Memorial" or "Commemorative") shall be used.
  3. A Professorial Name Chair should not be created in memory of a deceased faculty member until at least three years have passed since his or her death.
  4. The number of Professorial Name Chairs on the campus should not exceed 10% of the total number of funded Endowed Chairs on the campus. The Chancellor’s Office should allocate these Chairs proportionately to the number of faculty in different parts of the campus.
  5. A Professorial Name Chair, once created, shall continue in existence for a period of 20 years or, if an incumbent occupies the Chair at the end of the 20- year period, until such time as the incumbent retires, is deceased or leaves the employ of the University.
  6. A Professorial Name Chair may be established upon the recommendation of the Dean to the Chancellor after appropriate consultation with the department(s) involved. The Chancellor shall consult with the Council on Academic Personnel regarding the appropriateness of creating the proposed Chair in memory of the faculty member after whom the Chair is named. Thereafter, the Chancellor may recommend to the President and the Regents the creation of the Chair, in accordance with applicable systemwide policy.
  7. A Professorial Name Chair may be created only in the name of a deceased faculty member of the highest distinction.
  8. Search and appointment procedures for appointment of a faculty member to a Professorial Name Chair shall be the same as those for UCLA Endowed Chairs. The criterion for appointment to such a Chair shall also be the same as for UCLA Endowed Chairs. Such a Chair shall be held for the duration of the occupant’s tenure on the UCLA faculty; and upon retirement, the occupant shall be known as the _____________ Professor, Emeritus. The holder of a Professorial Name Chair may not simultaneously hold another category of Endowed Chair.
