The UCLA campus is home to a number of performing and visual arts organizations, each providing a multitude of annual programs and events. An array of museums, galleries and gardens, archives and performing arts events fulfill both cultural cravings and the scholarly needs of faculty and students. UCLA is considered to have one of the finest university-based arts programs in the country and many of its collections are on a par with the best in the nation. Each year, hundreds of individual program events and exhibitions are presented in venues on or near campus.

UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History
The Fowler Museum celebrates the diverse cultures and visual arts found throughout the world. Overseeing a collection of more than 750,000 objects, the Fowler's mission is to explore the art and material culture of past and present peoples, primarily from Africa, Asia, Oceania and Native and Latin America. Eight to ten changing exhibitions are presented each year. UCLA researchers and scholars have access to exhibitions and collections by appointment. UCLA Hammer Museum
The Hammer museum presents a variety of arts programs organized by UCLA and other major institutions. In addition to a diverse schedule of historical and contemporary art exhibitions, the museum presents music, dance, poetry, gallery talks, symposia and docent tours. Selections from the Armand Hammer Collections are regularly presented, including works by Claude Monet, Mary Cassatt, Vincent Van Gogh and Honoré Daumier. UCLA faculty and staff may join the museum for a small annual fee. Geffen Playhouse
The playhouse, a proscenium theater, serves as a professional theater company for the Los Angeles community and an education resource to the University. Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts
Housed in the UCLA Armand Hammer Museum, the Grunwald Center's holdings consist of more than 35,000 works of art on paper including prints, drawings, photographs and artists' books dating from the Renaissance to the present. Independently and in association with major museums and libraries around the world, the center organizes exhibitions and publishes catalogs. Access to the collections for study and curricular purposes is encouraged; call (310) 443-7078 for an appointment.
 

UCLA Film and Television Archive
The Archive, an active member of the Federation of International Film Archives, maintains a vast collection of original film, newsreel and television materials second in size in the United States only to the Library of Congress. Research and curricular use of the collection is actively encouraged; viewing takes place at the Research and Study Center in 46 Powell Library, (310) 206-5388. Film programs and research symposia are often held in conjunction with other academic departments and study centers. In Fall 2002, in conjunction with the Department of Film, Television and Digital Media and the Department of Information Studies, the Archive is launching an M.A. program in Moving Image Archive Studies. The Archive also is an active cinematheque, open to the public, with a year-round calendar of film, video and television series. FRANKLIN D. MURPHY SCULPTURE GARDEN

Spanning nearly seven acres on North Campus, the Murphy Sculpture Garden is an "open-air museum" featuring more than 70 works by some of the greatest European and American sculptors of the late 19th and 20th centuries, including Matisse, Noguchi, Miro, Rodin and David Smith. It is open year-round and offers a contemplative environment for study or relaxation. Docent tours are available, call (310) 443-7000.
 

MILDRED E. MATHIAS BOTANICAL GARDEN

The seven-acre botanical garden, used for botanical and geology teaching and research, contains some 5,000 species of native and exotic plants. Named in honor of noted UCLA Botany Professor Mildred E. Mathias, the garden offers a wooded retreat into nature. Southeast corner of campus, (310) 825-1260. UCLA HANNAH CARTER JAPANESE GARDEN

The two-acre UCLA Hannah Carter Japanese Garden, located one mile from campus in Bel Air, is an authentic Kyoto-style garden and considered to be one of the most notable Japanese gardens in the United States. Major features in the garden include the main gate, garden house, family shrine, and a pond with colorful koi. The garden averages over 4,500 visitors annually and is featured in numerous garden books, magazines and garden shows. Reservations are required for parking. UCLA LIVE 
Formerly known as the UCLA Center for the Performing Arts, UCLA Live is a producer and presenter of music, dance, theater and the spoken word, featuring hundreds of outstanding artists each year.  From the ancient to the modern, the local to the global, and the underground to the world-renowned, UCLA Live is committed to supporting the development of new and existing work by both major and emerging artists.  Considered by many to be the finest university program in the country, the center is often compared to the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center and the Brooklyn Academy of Music for its breadth of programming.  Visit http://www.uclalive.org/for a calendar of events. Call (310) 825-4401 or email info@uclalive.org for general questions.

School of Theater, Film and Television

Theater: The Theater Department stages an annual season of main-stage plays in the Freud Playhouse or the Little Theater in Macgowan Hall. Discounted tickets are available to faculty and staff. Theater parties, tours, receptions and question-and-answer sessions with cast or director can be arranged with the Special Events Coordinator. Film and Television:  The James Bridges Theater in Melnitz Hall is the locale for most public screenings showcasing the Documentary Salon, (310) 206-8365, an ongoing program of events featuring the work of preeminent documentary and experimental filmmakers; Melnitz Movies, (310) 825-2345 sponsored by the Graduate Students Association, shows new and not-yet-released films and often features the director for a post-screening discussion; and UCLA’s Film and Television Archive, (310) 206-FILM presents an eclectic mix of over 400 films and videos a year, combining the best of classic, mainstream and cutting-edge. The Department also sponsors The Festival, an eight night celebration each spring of student works featuring film, video, new media, animation and screenwriting and TheaterFest, which features everything from performance art to the classics.  Many of the screenings and theater events are headlined by celebrity alumni. Whether you're an armchair athlete or prefer to participate in sports, UCLA has a broad range of programs and facilities to accommodate your wishes. Athletics play a major role in the University's mission to provide a well-rounded education both in and out of the classroom, and you can cheer the Bruins on to victory in a total of 22 varsity sports. For faculty and staff who want to join in the fun, Cultural and Recreational Affairs offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities. University families also can spend part of the summer at the Bruin Woods Family Resort in Lake Arrowhead.


INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

UCLA is committed to a broad-based, nationally competitive athletics program for men and women, and the University continues to live up to its reputation as a national leader in intercollegiate sports. With 10 men's and 12 women's varsity teams, UCLA consistently represents the Pacific-10 Conference in national competitions such as the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). All faculty and staff, as well as students, are encouraged to join Bruin fans at home events. A Blue Card facilitates regular attendance throughout the year at all olympic sports, and season tickets for football and basketball games are available through the Central Ticket Office at (310) 825-2101. CULTURAL AND RECREATIONAL AFFAIRS (UCLA RECREATION)

Cultural and Recreational Affairs, a division of Student and Campus Life, serves as the administrative center for the coordination of programming, facilities, equipment and supervision of campus recreational activities and services. UCLA faculty and staff may participate by purchasing any of three membership options for an annual or quarterly fee.   The “RecCard” membership gives you access to recreation facilities, programs and great discounts. If you prefer a smaller environment, select a Fit Center South membership at our Westwood facility at 1000 Veteran.  Or for the best of all possible worlds, choose the Combo membership and get all the terrific features of both.  Call for details and an application. Programs available:

Fit Center South: Offers state-of-the-art cardiovascular equipment, personal trainers, convenient hours, free day-use lockers, exclusive membership and helpful fitness staff.  Serving primarily the south campus, Fit Center South maintains quality recreation and fitness programs for the UCLA Community. 1000 Veteran Avenue, (310) 206-1907.

Fitness, Instruction and Training Program: A broad range of non-credit instructional recreation classes is available in the arts, aquatics, dance, fitness, martial arts, sports and  yoga . Most classes are designed for beginning and intermediate skill levels. Private training is available in a wide variety of sports and recreational activities. Fitness is offered as a recreation class or on a drop-in basis; a fitness pass must be purchased to participate in drop-in classes. 

Intramural/Club Sports Program: Consists of team, dual and individual sports competition in tournament or league play. More than 40 activities ranging from basketball to badminton to volleyball and water polo are offered in men's, women's and co-ed divisions. Varying skill levels are offered and the emphasis is on friendly competition.

Outdoor Adventures Program: A wide range of adventure activities is available including backpacking, rock climbing, camping, hiking, kayaking, windsurfing, sailing, rowing and more. Outdoor Adventures take place at the Marina Aquatic Center in Marina del Rey, the Wilderness Outing Program, the Challenge Course at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center and the Rock Wall in the John Wooden Center.  All outings and classes are designed to encourage personal growth, lifelong fitness and recreation, effective group interaction skills and FUN!

Recreation Facilities/Informal Recreation: Opportunities abound for independent recreation and exercise in several major on-campus facilities. The John Wooden Recreation and Sports Center is a comprehensive student activities building with many gymnasia, racquetball/handball courts, squash courts, a weight-training room and a rock wall for indoor climbing. The Sunset Canyon Recreation Center, with meeting rooms, swimming pools, picnic/barbecue areas, sand volleyball courts, tennis courts and Challenge Course -- offers year-round outdoor activities. Additional recreational programs are available at Pauley Pavilion, Drake Stadium, the Los Angeles Tennis Center, Sycamore Park, Men's Gym, Kaufman Hall and Recreation Fields. [NoteThe Men's Gym and Kaufman Hall are under construction until December 2003 and February 2004, respectively.] 

Recreation thru Association: UCLA Recreation is proud to offer Bruin Masters Swim, Bruin Strokes , Masters Rowing  and the UCLA Golf Club. These programs are open to UCLA faculty, staff, students, alumni affiliates and donors. Come join the fun!

Recreational Clubs: Students and RecCard members who are interested in activities that are primarily instructional or social in nature may pursue those interests through various sport and recreational clubs.

UCLA Marina Aquatic Center: Located in Marina del Rey, the Marina Aquatic Center offers watersports instruction, equipment rental for independent recreation and other nautical activities. The center also oversees the competitive sailing and crew teams. 

Youth and Family Programs: Offers year-round activities for children ages 18 months to 17 years. Summer programs include Bruin Kids Camp (grades K-6th), Camp Explore (grades 3rd-7th), Camp X-treme (grades 7th-9th), Teen Outdoor Adventures, UCLA Summer Programs for high school students as well as group and private lessons.  Activities combine play with skill development and keep the fun in learning.


BRUIN WOODS FAMILY RESORT

In July and August, the UCLA Lake Arrowhead Conference Center becomes the Alumni Association's Bruin Woods Family Resort, where UCLA alumni and faculty/staff families go for a full week of summer-camp activities and water sports. For information and reservations, call (909) 337-2478.


OTHER RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Discounts to Local Entertainments: Discounted movie tickets may be purchased at the Central Ticket Office by faculty, staff and students for little more than half price and then exchanged at the theater box office for regular performance tickets. In addition, packets of discount cards are available free of charge to all faculty and staff . Each card offers a discount of approximately 10-15 percent off regular admission at such attractions as Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, Six Flags Magic Mountain, Universal Studios, Sea World and the San Diego Zoo. On-Campus Events: During the regular academic year, popular recent-issue films are shown in the Grand Ballroom of Ackerman Union at $2 admission per movie. Watch the Daily Bruin for announcements of coming attractions. In addition, "Melnitz Movies" in Melnitz Hall generally features new and not-yet-released films; see UCLA Today for upcoming screenings. UCLA FACULTY CENTER

The Faculty Center is an entirely self-supporting membership organization for UCLA faculty, administrators and selected staff. Its many well-furnished meeting rooms, lounges, patios and dining facilities are available for a wide range of social and professional activities, though the primary uses of the center are for members' luncheons, dinners and special events. Services include continental breakfast, gourmet coffees, cappuccino, espresso weekdays beginning at 7:30 a.m., cocktail lounge with complimentary hors d'oeuvres 4-7:30 p.m., gourmet dinners Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and banquet and catering services. All academic staff employed by the University at least 50 percent time are eligible for membership; the first three months are provided dues-free. An extended dues-free period and lower monthly dues are offered to junior faculty. Association of Academic Women (AAW)

AAW fosters collegiality among academic and other professional women at UCLA by providing regular opportunities for intellectual exchange. The association is concerned with women's professional advancement and general welfare on campus, and program topics range from art to science, from career advancement to health care. UCLA Faculty Women's Club

The Faculty Women's Club promotes good fellowship among the faculty, their spouses, and the entire UCLA community through a program of educational and social activities. More than 25 special-interest sections suit the varied interests of members. They include music, galleries and sights, foreign language conversations, book reviews, desktop publishing, tennis, international cooking, investment and bridge. The club awards annual scholarships and grants to UCLA students. It also administers the Fietta Wilkin Clendennin Memorial Scholarship, awarded to a wife of a UCLA faculty member. Lesbian and Gay Faculty/Staff Network

The UCLA Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Campus Resource Center supports and promotes the interests and concerns of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) members of the UCLA community and our allies through social events, informal discussions, educational presentations confronting bigotry and bias, and heightening awareness to LGBT issues. UCLA Emeriti Association

The Emeriti Association functions as an emeriti representative and advocate of emeriti interests to the University and campus administration. UCLA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

With more than 75,000 dues-paying members, the Alumni Association provides the critical link between alumni of all eras and the continuing life of the University. Such programs include the annual Distinguished Teaching Awards, Outstanding Senior and Outstanding Graduate Students awards, and more than $850,000 in student scholarships.
