MISSION STATEMENT

 
It is the goal of the Academic Personnel Office to provide service to administrators and faculty by way of training, by acting as a resource for information and policy interpretation, and to guide administrators in the implementation of policies that impact upon the appointment and advancement of academic personnel. The University has a complex review procedure to build
and maintain its excellent faculty. This review mechanism is designed to ensure that individuals are judged by their colleagues in accordance with fair procedures solely on the basis of professional qualification in matters of appointment and advancement.

The Academic Personnel Office believes that the dissemination of information, through on-going training to those individuals directly responsible, empowers those individuals to act in accordance with proscribed policies based on their knowledge and understanding.
 

Training & Policy
Conducts campuswide certificated training programs on academic policies and the faculty review process for staff administrators. Conducts annual workshops for faculty administrators. Disseminates policy changes on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Academic Personnel, for informal and formal review. Maintains the UCLA academic policy and procedures manual, The CALL. Interprets policy and procedures related to The CALL and the Academic Personnel Manual (APM). Interprets policy and procedures related to the School of Medicine and School of Dentistry Compensation Plans. Advises the Vice Chancellor, Academic Personnel, regarding departmental requests for exception to policy. Audits compliance to policy for academic actions made to the EDB online system.
 

Faculty Review
Coordinates the faculty review process to appoint, appraise and advance academic appointees. Issues annual announcement of academic action deadlines and eligibility listings. Coordinates the 5-year review process of department chairs in the School of Medicine on behalf of the Executive Vice Chancellor. Coordinates the 5-year review process of Deans on behalf of the Executive Vice Chancellor. Coordinates the annual administrative allocation process for the appointment/ reappointment of Chairs/Vice Chairs, Associate/Assistant Deans, and Directors on behalf of the Executive Vice Chancellor. Coordinates executive searches for Vice Chancellor, Dean and Director positions on behalf of the Executive Vice Chancellor.  Coordinates with the Associate Vice Chancellor, Faculty Diversity, requests for waiver of searches due to target of opportunity appointments. Serves as the office of record for all faculty dossiers.
 

Other Academic Services
Conducts annual orientation for new faculty. Maintains the UCLA Faculty Resource Guide.  Reviews, makes recommendations, and communicates outcome of actions requiring approval by the Vice Chancellor, Academic Personnel. Reviews and processes requests for faculty removal expenses. Administers Emergency Faculty Loan program. Maintains status of newly proposed, vacant, and occupied Endowed Chairs and Presidential Chairs. Prepares required corporate reporting for Office of the President. Provides ad-hoc statistical reports and analysis in response to requests from campus offices and organizations, various off-campus agencies, and universities. Maintains statistical information on Campus Diversity under the direction of the Associate Vice Chancellor, Faculty Diversity.  Coordinates the academic range adjustment process with the Administrative Information Systems office.
