New Retirement Planning Workshops

March 20, 2015

Dear Colleagues:

In my October 31, 2014 letter to you, I indicated the many possibilities and opportunities that retirement can bring to faculty, such as mentoring, teaching, serving as PI on a research grant, chairing a dissertation committee, and serving on an Academic Senate committee.  At this time of enrollment growth and resource constraints, UCLA recognizes that retired faculty bring tremendous value to the campus through their wisdom and experience, as well as their teaching, research, and service.  Further in my letter, I alluded to two programs being developed to assist you in thinking about and planning for this important decision sometime in your university life: Faculty Retirement Planning Workshops and first-person accounts by faculty who have established fulfilling relationships with UCLA as Emeriti.

I am pleased to announce that in partnership with University Extension, these programs have become reality and will be offered as a new faculty retirement workshop series entitled Path Forward – Owning Your Retirement and Future.  The information presented will assist you in examining and planning ahead for retirement.  All Senate faculty, regardless of age, years of university service, or title can participate.

The retirement workshops are part of a larger University initiative aimed at supporting you and your continuing role as scholars and teachers.  UCLA is committed to creating a culture where faculty retirements are supported from preliminary discussion with your Department Chair through and beyond the date of your retirement.  This is taking our prior Pathways to Retirement initiative to new heights.

The four workshops in the series will (1) present exemplars of success in maintaining active and satisfying continued engagement with colleagues and the campus, (2) explore ways that work-life balance can be achieved most effectively in retirement, (3) prepare you to achieve the best possible post-retirement arrangements within your academic unit, and (4) help you understand the mechanics of retirement planning.  These retirement workshops have been designed specifically for faculty and limited to faculty attendance.  Please refer to the Path Forward – Owning Your Retirement and Future curriculum explaining the program and each workshop in more detail.

To participate in this inaugural workshop series, you must enroll by completing one of the following two options.  Either action must be completed and received by University Extension no later than Tuesday, April 7, 2015.  To enroll in Path Forward – Owning Your Retirement and Future, Course #257975:

(1) complete your registration online by clicking here to register, or

(2) call University Extension at (310) 825-9971 to register for Course #257975.

As part of UCLA’s ongoing commitment to you, the Dean of your School has agreed to cover the cost of your attendance at the retirement workshops.

I hope you will take advantage of this opportunity offered by the University and set aside time in your busy academic life to attend.  If you have any questions, or prefer to incur the cost yourself, please feel free to contact Lynda Wilson, Department Director, Humanities and Sciences, at University Extension.  Her phone is (310) 825-7093 and her email is lwilson@unex.ucla.edu.
