Appendix 30: Campus Policy Statement on Office and Laboratory Space for Emeriti Faculty

A letter from the Chancellor regarding Emeriti Faculty:

September 2009

DEANS, DIRECTORS, AND DEPARTMENT CHAIRS

Dear Colleagues:

Our emeriti faculty, who have devoted years of dedicated service to UCLA, remain valued members of our Bruin family.  Many of them maintain close ties with UCLA, and with their knowledge, talent, and experience, continue to contribute to university life.

A number of UCLA resources offer services, support, and information to emeriti faculty.  Those include the Emeriti/Retirees Relations Center, the Benefits Office, the Staff and Faculty Counseling Center, and the Emeriti Association.  In addition, the Academic Senate’s committee on University Emeriti and Pre-Retirement Relations, which stays in close contact with my office, is responsible for considering emeriti matters.

Our academic departments also have responsibilities to emeriti faculty, including – to the maximum extent possible – providing facilities and services to those who remain professionally active.  To that end, I ask each of you to:

  • provide, whenever possible, adequate office and laboratory space (individual, when feasible, or shared) for our retired faculty, as well as access to appropriate departmental services;
  • ensure that all current emeriti faculty are listed accurately in the General Catalog and in the UCLA Campus Directory; and
  • consider the critical role that these colleagues play in many departmental and campus affairs and facilitate their participation when appropriate.

Finally, let us always show our support and deep appreciation for our retired faculty members who have played and continue to play a vital role in our campus community.

Sincerely,

Gene D. Block
Chancellor
